I robbed an 11k house to make one of these exploit houses. I know it'll be patched soon, but I really want to see how confused someone gets.

By the way, people seem to be getting a lot better. I'm able to rob a lot fewer houses with starting tools than I used to.

#53 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-18 13:58:24

In fact, pushing this idea to 11 would mean just doing 1 electronics step per robber step.  Then even the simplest paradox circuit would flip back and forth as the robber walked around.

While this would mean a bit of waiting around, wouldn't it make things a lot more intuitive? The fact that we needed a mod to show substeps is worrying. Especially because it all is a little arbitrary and based on these magic numbers.

#54 Re: Main Forum » New Server Idea : Bots / AI Robbers » 2014-02-18 10:04:09

Interesting idea. Someone would have to work up a guide to make the barriers to entry really low here.....

#55 Re: Main Forum » Name your Price » 2014-02-18 09:47:52

I just wanted to live near the top peacefully

Yea, sorry. That's not really an option for anyone at the top.

I'll check my tapes to see if I can find the name although others might remember as well; you were 2nd place. Clever house by the way!

#56 Re: Main Forum » Name your Price » 2014-02-18 05:11:13

What happened?

I was being dumb in Connell's house. I came back for a second time and couldn't remember how the floors turned on... it was a long family member path. And I just wasn't taking the time to think about it. I've gotten into the habit of treating everything like a black box.

I wasn't a very good tyrant. That was only like the second person I was trying to take out for having too much money.

I have to say I'm really impressed Jere!

Thanks and nice annotations, Pandamonium. A lot of the other features are there to prevent someone digging through from exploring freely.

-A fail safe on the first section. It turns on if you cut in either direction, but it wasn't as effective as I expected. Most brute forcers were smart and cut the first floor.

-The cat on the right is inspired by Blip's advice. If you somehow cut through from any direction other than the bottom, the cat will die.

-Lots of electric floors/doors that simply turn off if visited in order.

-Those doors in the middle become a guessing game unless you have plenty of crowbars.

redxaxder cut through the deepest and got to the part right before the middle chihuahua. He didn't even see the chihuahua though because of the camera! I'm really wondering if this is what he expected because he said:

P.S. Unless the thing I found is a decoy, you should probably make some changes to your house. The orientation of that trap is really suggestive; a lot of space must have already been used leading up to it. I have a strong suspicion about where your vault is.

Well, that's it folks.

^I don't necessarily mean doing it intentionally. I lost money this morning on a house because I made bad assumptions about how it worked and I had to come back an embarrassing number of times.

Regardless, it's a strategy that is on the table. If you think your house can be brute forced for $30k, it might be rational to use twice that to take out the people with $30k.

Would that be just vault value or total house value? Because I currently have a house built with 20K, but with $64 in the vault.

Also, that brings up the strategy of spending arbitrarily to lower your value. I do it, as somebody who often has to not play for multiple days. What should we do about it? Is it a legit tactic, or exploitive?

Total listed value (i.e. the amount a robber stands to gain). It's a simple comparison between how much they could potentially make and how much they are carrying with which to attempt it. It makes little sense to bring in $2k of tools on a $100 house or $100k on a $50k house (except for what we're discussing here).

And I'm fine with spending down... you lower your spot on what is essentially the leaderboard. You potentially reduce your income.

That certainly looks like a neat house. I think you're going to have to annotate that a little bit though.... I'd have no clue unless I sat down with this for like an hour.

The part that I'm asking about though: is this useful considering the weakness of wired walls? The house you posted is extremely susceptible to saws. Maybe if steel walls conducted again and they were extremely expensive, this would an awesome way to conserve money.

Andrus, nooooo! I just saw his house a few minutes ago. Bummer.

But you know what? If you really believe that you have a bunch of stored mapping knowledge, you should bounce back easily.

#62 Re: Main Forum » Name your Price » 2014-02-17 18:17:46

I have no idea if someone has stayed on top without knocking out competition. I haven't seen it happen lately.

When I started paying attention to this issue, it was when everyday someone at the top was wiping out several pages of their nearest competitors. I felt like this was a problem and made a few threads about it.

I posed the following question:

I'm just wondering if it's even possible with excellent play to stay at the top for more than a week. Unless that top house systematically wipes out all competition, it doesn't seem likely.

Price (jwg) took me up on the offer to stay on top for a week, but he stayed there for as long as he did (before being hacked) precisely by knocking out competition.

Wallace did the same thing Saturday night.

I'm there now and it looks like I'm going to have to play by those rules, whether or not that I think that is good for the game. I don't think there is an alternative. The problem is that money keeps going up linearly, but you see diminishing returns on fortifying your house. I've talked about how there is a actually a pretty low floor on the most you would ever need to brute force any house: $2.5 million. That's a lot of money, but maybe lower than you might expect. I'd say as you approach $200k of tools, you all but guarantee a brute force is going to be successful.

Besides fuel, I made another suggestion that might mitigate this somewhat: don't let a robber enter a house if the sell value of their backpack exceeds the house's value. Maybe add an exception for paintings. That would prevent both this rob at a loss strategy and griefing of low level houses.

We'll see what happens. Honestly, I'd be surprised if I make it a week even by taking out threats.

Gregory Jeffrey Andrus.

Ha! We share middle names.

#64 Re: Main Forum » TrineDoc Server: small community, fixed bugs, anti-cheat » 2014-02-17 15:20:11

If you walk into someone's house, troll. Take their money, cheater. Starting house gets $17,000,000,000,000.

j/k tongue Jason seems very encouraging about people starting their own servers.

TrineDoc is great for players who don't want to get robbed as much as on the main server.

Seriously though, I don't get this part. It would then be a server for people who prefer not robbing very much either, right?

#65 Re: Main Forum » Laser grid? » 2014-02-17 14:35:35

This doesn't fit the game at all, but is an amusing thought.

Doing such will initiate a QTS/DDR kind of mini game.

Talk about a magic dance. Quick! Get onto the pad!

Should I make a thread about dance pad support? Can we forced to solve houses scored with techno songs?

#67 Re: Main Forum » New Compact Clock Design! » 2014-02-17 13:08:49

The best house is the one you build with the money you get from robbing a $10k house with $3.8k of tools. wink

#68 Re: Main Forum » New Compact Clock Design! » 2014-02-17 13:02:51

It's really not that bad. You already know how to do magic dances, I've seen that!

The 1-bit clock part is really simple in concept. The clock toggles every the robber moves or uses a tool. On. Off. On. Off. The way I've used this is to have hallways of alternating deadly-when-ON/deadly-when-OFF traps. If you stay in line and don't use tools, you're protected.

There are many other uses for clocks, but I found that to be the most interesting.

#69 Re: Main Forum » New Compact Clock Design! » 2014-02-17 12:46:56

I explained in the that post but I'll be happy to answer questions.

House 1
You have to magic dance to get the dog safely to the button in the middle. The traps the dog has to cross.... they are powered by a 2-bit clock instead of the 1-bit clock you normally see on the path. Once you do the dance correctly, that's it. The door starts opening/closing. The cat trap is deactivated. You simply walk to the vault.

House 2

The self test involve me going all the way to the end, and then using the final dog door there as a magic dance to turn back on the safety of the clock, turn it off long enough to get the 2 dogs out, turn it back on, and then fry them at the top.

So the clock actually protects you from the dogs in that house, but you have to kill the bottom two dogs to get to the safe. The trick is really about hiding the vault in an unexpected location.

Also if you don't mind, can you maybe share a little bit about your current (penn, i think) house?

Heh. It's quite boring actually. The higher you get, the harder "interesting" houses are to defend. Josh has said if you want to make a puzzle house you should probably stay below $30k. So anyway. No clocks. You should already know there are magic dances. A combo lock or two is thrown in for good measure. Good luck!

Yea... I knew the camera was going to be off. I can never remember how far you can see from the entrance.

#71 Re: Main Forum » Finally got robbed. Here is my house, please give me some tips. » 2014-02-17 12:26:39

phew

No I mean, is there a way for you to have powered pits that need to get powered from somewhere, but have more than one, still not connected to a wired wall or something that way they can't just use saws and then a single ladder instead of two or more. I ask this because they can't conduct so i see no way of having more than one in a row that isn't connected to a safety bridge.

Well, there has to be something that powers them, but you can go a long way toward isolating them. Something like this. http://castledraft.com/editor/87IIn1

I hinted at it in my other post. Each wired wooden wall section gets you 2 trapdoors and even if you start sawing after you get past the first trapdoor, you still have to deal with a powered door at the end. By the way, the camera might be off and this is not a very good house, just an example.

You should force every scouting trip that a robber makes to have a high minimum cost. A good example of this is the entryway of jere's (Mr. Charles Jeffrey Penn's) house. http://castledraft.com/editor/tTqh2D Leaving the house costs at least one ladder. Every time. This makes multiple scouting trips much more expensive.

Well, realize that this is a good strategy for defense but is not so great for getting people to come inside.

#73 Re: Main Forum » New Compact Clock Design! » 2014-02-17 12:00:12

These two houses were expensive, but maybe they can help give you ideas on how to use clocks in interesting ways: http://thecastledoctrine.net/forums/vie … php?id=855

#74 Re: Main Forum » Multiplexing » 2014-02-17 11:58:15

^I think that's it. I'm trying to think about how this is useful. Maybe that data wire is a huge electric floor hallway and that way you can have a bunch of crazy behavior on the other side without having the electronics there.

#75 Re: Main Forum » Finally got robbed. Here is my house, please give me some tips. » 2014-02-17 11:55:35

I'm not following you. You can use unpowered trapdoors as pits, but they're 3 times as expensive. Is that what you meant?
