#26 Re: Main Forum » Robert Corey Keenan » 2014-11-28 04:55:12

Oh, hi.
If I had the cash I would have tried to break out and look around the house. A fortified house with the vault by the door only makes me more curious. I wonder how often people shoot your dogs?

Speaking of which, I like what Mickens is planning with his house. Also has the vault on the doorstep and everything else (badly) hidden, but the house is about 3% complete. When I see an interesting but broken/no-trap house like that I try to build up a bounty and get killed by the wife, but unfortunately Mickens purchased a bunch of pitbulls but no shotgun sad

#27 Re: Main Forum » Any ways to bring preexisting player back into the game? » 2014-11-28 04:51:49

Aside from the occasional pitbull on the doormat I'm not sure that I've actually seen a one-time robbable house, but it is a pretty cool concept and I might try to make one sometime; good for leaving your house to itself. I notice that White is running out of pitbulls; I'll be sad to see him go (

JAAM: that's what I used to think, but actually keeping your wife alive has some significant benefits:
-reduces the amount of cash in the vault, making brute forcing less profitable
-reserve cash in case you get robbed
-wife traps
-pitbulls can be moved, so wife defenses can be repurposed, especially if your house is broken and you need something to protect your vault

If you place/use pitbulls effectively then they can be worth the price.

Hey, have fun. mcedit is written in Python, but there's probably far simpler minecraft-likes written in python which you could play around with.

Wow, you know what's a really great trap? Making your house look broken when it's not. People seem pretty willing to walk down a corridor of grills if it looks like whoever robbed the house broke into that corridor and waltzed down it themselves.

#29 Re: Main Forum » Robert Corey Keenan » 2014-11-27 02:48:29

Keenan has been around a long time; I think at least 2 months. I think his house was broken long ago, and I assume he's slowly building it up hidden from view, but since it's taking him so long maybe he's just mostly-inactive (or doesn't have an alt?).

#30 Re: Main Forum » Any ways to bring preexisting player back into the game? » 2014-11-26 01:37:07

Bishop? Didn't he have a high end house a while ago before being broken? Can't really remember.

Right now a surprising number of fairly expensive houses have appeared in the neighbourhood. 22 houses in total. Any idea what the cause of the surge could be?

Glaze's house was back, with the vault on the doormat.

JAAM, you're Shawn Dean Addington.

Cool, thanks! There's an awful lot of stuff in the archives of these forums, so I might do more digging.

$12868?! How did a house that required nothing but some water get so high? The thing about this game is that you have to work out what the weaknesses of your designs are and try to overcome them. Asking people not to exploit them isn't going to work (pretty sure most players don't read the forums.) It took me many attempts to learn to create a house that wasn't easy to break with $2K. For example electric grills are extremely weak defense if you can just pour water on them, but they become dangerous and far more expensive to bypass if they never turn on until the moment you step on them.

#32 Re: Main Forum » Mobile Version » 2014-11-24 19:43:47

Oh, right, I forgot about iOS. Sorry, I've only ported games to Android, not iOS. (iOS is just far too much hassle and cost if you're creating free games.)

#33 Re: Main Forum » Why bother - dual accounts ruins the experience. » 2014-11-24 11:45:52

Hahaha. That would be nice. Of course, noone except the people you tell on here would ever know that there was a link.

matthias, the solution is easy: get rid of the excess cash through robbery : )

smile

Really? How much longer was that trail of dogs?

I looked at the source code and found that the idle time out is actually an amount between 5 min and 9 min. That doesn't explain 20 min without timing out, though.

I've done several santa runs over the last few days. I thought 5 saws was the standard, so I always drop all kinds of other stuff (sometimes 5 cutters but mostly bricks and ladders and crap). However either someone else doing a lot of santa runs, or there is a pump-and-rob scheme going on in certain houses like Larkins.

Anyway, here is my own scheme for bringing back old players:

import_screen.png

It works, but I need to fix a couple problems before releasing it.

If you can put up a 2K house in half a minute (which is easy if you have one prepared and know the solution) then I think many people would do so even if they don't care to put more effort into the game. Now, does anyone have a collection of nice 2K designs for others to adapt?

#37 Re: Main Forum » Why bother - dual accounts ruins the experience. » 2014-11-24 09:43:03

Really, it wasn't you? Then someone just beat you to it! $30000 stolen, $9800 left on the wife.

Edit: Congrats! His house was gone because I was peeking inside.

#38 Re: Main Forum » Why bother - dual accounts ruins the experience. » 2014-11-24 07:06:10

No, I haven't visited your house with more than $2K. Actually I don't remember ever visiting any of your houses with more -- I very rarely do that. (Seems like you've been using the same pitbull-and-dual-trapdoor-start design for a long time)

I claim that Glaze is interesting because you can actually figure a great deal out with $2K scouts. (I've only just started.) Interesting and secure are complete opposites.

However, if he's dual/triple accounting, as almost certainly seems to be the case, AND is ruining other people's houses, that's really sad. Dual account exploiting isn't so bad if you only use it to build up your own house; at least then there's an extra high value house on the list.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Mobile Version » 2014-11-24 06:53:31

This is why I think cullman should just publicly post that build. Can't see any reason not to. (And what if Jason wants to create Android releases of any of his other games?)

#40 Re: Main Forum » Why bother - dual accounts ruins the experience. » 2014-11-24 06:52:06

You guys are saying bad things about Mr. Glaze, and convinced me not to do Santa runs on his house. But the truth is that he has the most friendly and interesting house on the list right now, not like your damn combo lock, Passive! You're damn lucky that I just suicided after reaching Larkin's vault instead of taking the $8K and brute forcing your house smile

(I feel bad for Larkin; his house value has exploded in the last few hours)

#41 Re: Main Forum » The Fortress of Mr. Corey Phillip Smith » 2014-11-16 02:01:16

Ouch, I had never considered that hazard of a dead child.

Clay must be dead. All the paintings are back in the auction, and I haven't seen any high value houses at all today. Fun fact: we can calculate the exact time of death from the auction prices. They start at $100,000 and halve every 12 hours. I calculate he died about 354 minutes ago.

matthias is king of the hill!

#42 Re: Main Forum » The Fortress of Mr. Corey Phillip Smith » 2014-11-15 17:54:32

Egads, dropping like flies. This wasn't the first time I mistook a sleeping pitbull in a broken house for a dead one. It's a pity, I had loads of tapes I wanted to watch. (I hope in cullman's reboot he changes that.) Added $10K to the John Drake house to whoever wants it (edit: gone)

Well, finally I might do some santa runs and poke around; been very inactive.

matthias, you are John Edmund Hale.

Ah, a mistaken keypress rather than surprise isn't as funny. I wonder if we'll see any more from you. I suspect you've already suicided my house again (walked into the pitbull?)

Hmm, I guess you can probably play the game just fine on a phone even if you lose the connection for a minute at a time. Hadn't realised that.

Amazing, Ronald Mcdonald just visited my house. It's too bad that I don't see his house in the neighbourhood!

#45 Re: Main Forum » Android ? » 2014-11-14 00:52:31

Yes, I know, but because you have an Android port of the TCD client in addition to developing a new game it could be released. I can understand if you want having an Android port to be a selling point of TH over TCD, though that seems rather unnecessary. Was hoping you'd contribute back

#46 Re: Main Forum » The Fortress of Mr. Corey Phillip Smith » 2014-11-14 00:46:11

Yeah, I was amazed to see the $40100 bounty. I was very amused to see you walk straight into a pitbull, assuming that the house was totally undefended. Keeping some spare pitbulls around in case of all your cash being taken is a great idea. (Can't believe I only learnt recently that they could be moved for free). The period 3 clock isn't meant to be a puzzle, it's just a commit gate. However, most people are poor players and couldn't even work it out.

I'm also amazed that you had racked up a $40K bounty despite having quit the game! I should have known it was you!

Also, I only just realised that you lost your house matthias. What happened to it? Happy to be have been able to finance your new house though; looks interesting smile

#47 Re: Main Forum » Why bother - dual accounts ruins the experience. » 2014-11-12 19:49:48

Damn, sorry to see you two leave.

I'm surprised that Jason didn't try to adjust the rules to lessen dual account abuse. I think it could be done, though not sure exactly how. Partially, $2000 of tools pumps up the value of a house too easily.

My puzzle house seems to be mostly immune to dual account abuse because seeing the whole map tells you nothing except where to dig. Finding the toolless solution is also very difficult because there is no solution smile. It's possible that people are still dumping money in the house and then come back later with enough tools, by why do that when there are simpler houses? There's no way I could tell that was happening from the tapes though.

Sorry I never made any serious attempts at your house, eppfel. I'm clearly missing out

#48 Re: Main Forum » The Fortress of Mr. Corey Phillip Smith » 2014-11-12 19:41:56

But 6 times $200 is only $1200. That's a trivial amount to spend on breaking a house for the fun of it for someone who isn't poor. Canales just robbed $8000 from me (amused to see it took him 30 saws plus), so had the cash to spend. He's the sort of player who smashes things up after reaching your vault, though.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Android ? » 2014-11-12 19:33:27

Cullman, are you going to release the Android port of TCD? I don't see any reason not to.

#50 Re: Main Forum » Done » 2014-11-07 08:24:40

Oye, sorry to see you go. Hope you do check in and chat from time to time. Going to miss having low value houses brute forced.

I think that if TCD becomes permanently unplayably unpopulated (which might be pretty soon) then someone should just put up a free server for people to play on. But it would easily be less popular than the real thing. For example, I had someone just die in my house with a $50 bounty. A player who hasn't played the game since the start bounty was $50, which appears to be during a small window 9 months ago.

(BTW I feel that even with few houses on the list the game price still isn't bad if you're the obsessive type like we are, who can spend a lot of time on it and get our $15 worth. As someone who arrived recently, it's really a shock to see people 7 months ago already calling the game unplayable due to a low population)

Regarding the death on leaving the house, several times over the last week the server seemed to have gone down for up to several minutes at time; really scary to be robbing a house when that happens! The client is pretty asynchronous and seems to continue running fine when it happens, it just shows some red ... animation in the top right corner. I think it even let me end a self test and continue editing, or vice versa, without a connection to the server.

Also, regarding santa runs, over the course over 24 hours a day ago people did something like 8 of them on my house: gained $18000 of tools. That might be over the top. I didn't actually want the money because my house isn't a proper house, it's just designed for people to play with the circular shift register circuit on the Advanced Electronics page. I think you can guess how many people played with it despite it obviously being part of the puzzle of the house and totally safe. (It amazes me how bad most of the players of this game are!) The money attracted murderous thieves : (. Hey Passive, did you rob the first version of that house? At yet another big loss? smile

cullman: why would you need to ban cheaters? If the vision is handled server side (which also implies the moves are processed on the server and can't be undone) than it appears to me to be almost impossible to cheat.
