#27 Re: Main Forum » Wall filler? » 2014-02-27 05:41:06

My money is on checkerboard pits/concrete. I thought about this for a while; here's my reasoning:

All pits is expensive to cross ($1800/tile), but presents a big problem. The robber can see all the way across the giant pit, can rule out vault locations, and will probably opt to go around the pits. You can't do dogs + pits, so you'd end up with dogs + concrete. But that's about the same price to pass as all concrete.

With pits/concrete, you're splitting the difference and forcing an average buy of $1500/tile.

You could also try something the robber isn't expecting like steel walls or powered doors. I've done checkerboard doors/power and that's pretty good because crowbars are rare and robbers don't tend to bring that many. Slightly cheaper at $1250/tile.

IETF, eh? This game attracts some interesting people. And a note: it's a 9 day period (includes both weekends) and you are expected to complete your game within any 7 day period within that, wherever you happen to be obviously.

I could go on forever on this one. Since TCD is a roguelike, let me just give a shout out to 7DRL 2014. It's coming up in a couple weeks and there will probably be hundreds free roguelikes coming out of that; I'm sure some will be really interesting and innovative. So keep an eye on that. Maybe you could even write one yourself! I did it last year and am planning on participating again this year.

OK, to rustle a few more jimmies one last time, here is my v33 house. It's gone, so don't worry.

#31 Re: Main Forum » FAQ Page » 2014-02-22 09:02:13

New mechanic: steal walls.

#32 Re: Main Forum » I am sorry, Eric Robert Tso ($50,600 Bounty) » 2014-02-21 11:29:21

Weird. Tso kept visiting me last night, maybe a dozen times but never went far. We were both worth about $2k at the time. I'm absolutely shocked at that bounty. That's a bad man.

#34 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-20 17:57:18

I mean, the wired wooden walls vulnerability may be something Jason wants to keep

I'm fairly certain he does. The reason I say that is because steel walls used to conduct and they were changed specifically to increase the vulnerability of conducting walls.

#35 Re: Main Forum » Displaying paintings on walls ! » 2014-02-20 09:12:46

Neat!!!

If you wanted the robber to have a reasonable chance of finding them, you could make it so the paintings have to have a "clear path to the exit" like the family. That would probably make the family area more cozy anyway.

#36 Re: Main Forum » Family » 2014-02-19 19:39:59

no top house has a family, actually not even the "middle class" has a family anymore.

This is a strong claim and I have a hard time believing it. Half of the top 8 houses during the Steal Real Money contest had surviving families. This was only a few weeks ago....

#37 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 17:44:30

^^Yea in retrospect, the early versions were so broken. You're looking at a magic dance 29 tiles away PLUS the trapdoor hallway has zero weaknesses.

#38 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 16:32:13

Nah, just build this. http://castledraft.com/editor/xFNr6s

If you get it working, basically any other circuits stop functioning. You have about a day or so. If nothing else, it's fun to see the unexpected behavior.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 15:44:18

Wow, I skip visiting the forum for a couple days and suddenly the laws of physics have changed.

Yea it's quite strange how quickly this thing exploded.

Just realized a happy coincidence.

V33 Going beyond 32.... substeps

#40 Re: Main Forum » How come this is possible. » 2014-02-19 14:01:40

Well, no need to worry guys. I just redid my house so it is trivial to solve within the v32 rules.

#41 Re: Main Forum » The prevalence of clocks (Warning, rant) » 2014-02-19 13:01:43

Clocks aren't really that strong. I can't imagine any scenarios where a clock offers you anything that great that you can't get out of a magic dance. Clocks, by the way, can always be sawed to, they're predictable, and they're bulky too.

What you're seeing is that people are simply getting better.

#42 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 12:55:14

Yes, a few houses' self tests will be made invalid by the change, but that's no big deal.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Any idea when 33 is going to drop then?

#43 Re: Main Forum » [BUG] Unignore All button jumps to first page » 2014-02-19 12:43:27

Brilliant! That's the "Top" button everyone wants, already implemented. smile

#44 Re: Main Forum » How come this is possible. » 2014-02-19 11:16:01

Oh yea, I knew people were going to complain. Surprised it has taken this long.

But again, I think having the bug in the wild makes it easier to explain why the game needs to be patched.... instead of "hey we have to patch this because some of the electronics nerds think X, Y, and Z might be possible in theory."

#45 Re: Main Forum » How come this is possible. » 2014-02-19 11:07:31

Sorry. That's my house. It's all explained in the Wireless thread.

tl;dr: this is a bug based on the way electronics are calculated. It will probably be patched soon.

#47 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 09:29:47

Purging alone may be enough to fix it. I don't know. I haven't studied this stuff like some of ya'll have.

But that's still a release. And I don't know if adding purging affects the way any houses work..... if so, you'd need a reset.

Substeps are confusing. Anyone who disagrees is, I think, quite out of touch with how the average player approaches this game. There's no way to see them happening visually in the game and no one way to know they even exist without reading about them externally. Still, keeping substeps and adding a purge may be the best option on the table.

#48 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 08:28:56

I think one of the entertaining things about this game is finding out more and more stuff that can be done and the more you play the more you learn. Giving everything on a clean plate to the players takes away part of the fun in discovering the game mechanics.

Yea, tell that to the people coming into my house. They don't learn the trick in my house and they don't have a hope of trying it in their own without some help. They have no route to learning how this works and I don't think we should expect them to either.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Wireless transmission and Step-limit exploits » 2014-02-19 08:08:10

This one is more difficult and I'm not entirely sure where I stand on this. I think the fact that the cycle limit is arbitrary should not concern us too much though. Physics are arbitrary.

I totally disagree. The rules in this game are, in all other instances, fairly straightforward. While people struggle with electronics, it actually presents a very simple and consistent universe to play in. I found wiring here to be an order of magnitude easier than in Minecraft. To put it another way, physics might be arbitrary, but in the real world we build logic components that abstract most of that way and allow you to ignore the underlying physics.

The whole sub step thing and wireless power completely breaks down that simplicity and consistency. People should be able to get by on understanding the basic functionality of each component and not having to read the source code.

Oh come on, that's just mean. This stuff really isn't helping the ragequit factor.

This is just plain stupid. Nothing personal ofc, but from now on i'm not going to visit any house before this is fixed..

Here's the thing. Jason is going to have to patch this. And it's going to be a major release for what appears to be an obscure bug. I imagine a neighborhood reset will be needed because the rules will have changed.

All in all, people are going to want some justification. Ah, but what if the bug was actually being exploited! People would see it and demand a fix.

So there's that and, yea, I'm a bastard for enjoying this. smile
