Discuss the massively-multiplayer home defense game.

I have posted this in the other thread, but I think it belongs here:
I came up with something like this in my old house:
http://castledraft.com/editor/iE3w4C
When you step on electric floors it is hard to get out. If you cut the wired wall you will be fried from the side where dog is - because you will break paradox circuit which will then start powering the electric floors from the bottom side through the wire bridge. If you cut the electric floor in front of you the electric floors behind you will not be activated but everything in front of you will be because you broke the paradox circuit. Once you move the dog will hit the button which will then activate even the electric floors from behind you. The dog also closes door in front of him so the robber really needs to get through all of the electric floors.
You can make the dogs button to be deactivated once the robber does some magic dance and you have very nice trap. You can even use the dog on some commitment trap later as when the button will be deactivated the door will not close. It is quite hard to brute force. It costs $1200 (1050 if you use wooden walls everywhere), but you can lower the price by making the dog hallway a bit smaller and removing the powered doors if not needed. I made it this way so there is no way to stop the dog from hitting the button (at least I don't know about any).
So basically, if you want to get a good value house, take some extreme, paranoid, and impractical measures. Like, not having a job or real wife and kids...
Sorry to bash here, but that's really how i feel. And it's a damn shame cause i think that game is a gem apart from that and i would like to play it without those "impractical measures"... You know like... A video game.
You can just play at the level that you find comforting. Nobody forces you to go to top 8 houses where it is hard to survive (almost impossible). But that's like in other games - how do you think you would compete in Counter Strike (or any other game) against the best players of the world? (actually in TCD it is much easier to get to the top).
Everybody will fall - this is not a game where you should be protected for months. You will lose your house very often, you will die and you will be angry about it because it took you so long to figure out this clever house that you had and now it's gone. But even though you died in game the life goes on and you can build another house - that's what this game is about: building houses, robbing houses and dying ![]()
Use your imagination to make this game fun for you if you are sad about not being able to get to the top: build houses that are fun to solve for robbers or fun to watch security tapes. Don't try to think that your house is supposed to survive - it's supposed to fall.
I have job and family and I'm still able to enjoy this game very much (without some "impractical measures"), because I have simply accepted the fact that my house is just temporary.
I don't know much about programming or IT, but how about a simple website that received your login info, made a query on the game server and printed out the house value? That way you wouldn't need Android or iPhone programs, just plain and simple HTML (making it easy to check on a library computer, for instance).
Jason, does the server currently allow a query like this? It could even be implemented on CastleDraft if the creator wants to.
As far as I know the server code I think it's possible to do that, but that would not make a notification on your phone. I will try to look at it and do some testing. We will see how far I can get.
EDIT: I have looked at the server code and I believe there is currently no API specifically for that. Maybe Jason could add some call to get house value. There is the way to do it using start_edit_house API call and immediate end_edit_house call, but I don't think that is good solution. Those are the calls that your client does when you start working on your house and stop working on it. As far as I know when your house has been robbed and your wife is still alive as soon as you use start_edit_house the money will be split between your wife and your safe without you even touching anything in your house. And maybe that is also the reason why Jason will not provide such call, because you would know that your house has been robbed and intentionally not login using your game client to leave your house broken.

You didn't even give us enough time to wrap our heads around it.
Though my experiments still work in v33
I robbed you.
How did you do that?! I couldn't find a way around that light ![]()
This gave me idea to make a house with horizontal, vertical cables along the road to the vault used as - . in morse code. But I am afraid nobody would read that :-)
MMaster wrote:colorfusion wrote:Might not be an in game feature, but perhaps we could agree on some kind of robber step code.
Morse code using lights? :-)
Yeah, or maybe the homeowner could set out some kind of giant tile keyboard for the robber to dance on.
Ah so the other way around - robber could leave message to the house owner on the security tape before dying :-)
Might not be an in game feature, but perhaps we could agree on some kind of robber step code.
Morse code using lights? :-)
I thought so :-) I completely understand reasons behind that - so never mind :-)
I had always wanted to leave some message for robbers to read e.g.: "Do you want to play a game?" ;-)
Did this idea come up already?
It's worse than you think... he used 3 saws, but had one remaining and some other supplies. Effectively he stacked his own account by feeding it gear (on top of my treasure).
I don't think it's fair at all. Do you have any idea the exploiting you can do with this?
Person A is the scout
Person B is the exploiterThe other letters will indicate random players
A will go to only $50 bases.
A has $2000 worth of material on each death.
A goes to C and dies with all of his tools
B goes to C and lootsA goes to D and dies with half of his tools
B goes to D and lootsA goes to E, but is unable to find the vault- so he uses his tools and commits suicide.
A goes to F and dies with all of his tools
B goes to F and lootsRinse and repeat for a couple hours... your base will appear to have $0... nobody will raid it.
Your base will have as much money as you looted (tools are also counted).
Then when you accumulate enough wealth, form your monster trap base out of thin air.
MEANWHILE, those $50 bases were held by legitimate players that actually want to play the game and they were decimated. Their dogs were killed, their wives possibly too. So what exactly are they supposed to do? Obviously commit suicide and start over. Does that seem fair to you? Some dude came to your base, died, you won all of his stuff... and another dude comes along and jacks your $50 base- possibly breaking your traps and taking all of the legitimate gains.
You're hurting your newbie players a lot in this game, and nobody is going to stick around to play it if you don't do something.
It's not that profitable as you think - B will probably die very soon as house with $50 does not need to be starter house (it can be house with assets worth of $30000). It is not sustainable to play this way. As we said earlier - there is nothing you can do about it. Everything can be circumvented and no matter how much time Jason would invest into solving this it would not work as people would use proxies to have different IPs on different accounts. There is no way to pair those as they look like 2 different people from 2 different parts of the world.
That would still be restrictive as for example first house has high chance of being visited by unrelated neighbors with same IP several times. But even if we ignore that, you still have friends with different IPs that share the house info. One person can use TOR or some kind of VPN to have different IPs on both accounts. Not to say that one person can have 10 accounts if he can afford it so there is really no way to stop this.
I think what colorfusion said makes perfect sense.
This was opened several times and the thing is that there is no way to fix that without restricting regular players. If you have brother that also plays the game you can share the info as well, but you don't have to. Should you both be blocked from entering the same house, because you have the same IP? You can also share connection with your neighbors having the same IP. And still you can have friend with different IP and share the house information. There is basically no way around that. Yes it is quite unfair to the players with single account, but still it's not that abusable as you would think - thanks to the chills and force ignores.
Yes you can do that. And if you die with both accounts you have chills on both of them. 2 runs with starter tools are usually not enough. You can even post your findings on forums and encourage other users to rob the house. I would say it's part of the game.
As of 5/26/2014 free community server was disabled.
I'm sorry to all friendly intelligent people from community, but I no longer feel attached to this community as it is now. I refuse to spend my own money to support it anymore.
Thanks to everyone who helped new players, who tried to get this community to grow and explain honestly why some things are the way they are. Unfortunately populism is much better than honesty and there are now people in this community that apparently can't read properly, blame others for their mistakes and don't understand the point of the game. Some of them make me wish I have never registered on the forums.
Thanks to joshwithguitar, jere, Blip, colorfusion, iceman, Cylence, Lord0fHam, eppfel, mala and others that came to play the game and have fun instead of blaming others for their incompetence. You are the kind of people that this game needs. Thanks for all your effort making the game more accessible for people and making it more fun and interesting.
Special thanks to Jason for this awesome game, for considering suggestions, for being honest with people and for supporting this game even while he works on his next project. Kudos for making the game open-source that allowed me to make this server. Good luck with your next projects!
Regards,
self justifying asshole MMaster

Hi everyone,
I've read some talks about people wanting some kind of server for possible modding / testing. I have made such server for all of you. I want it to be completely free for community. Anyone can contribute, we can try some mods, some price changes, anything that the community would like to try. Maybe we can have some kind of polls to vote what do we want to do on the server.
It's completely free for everyone. I have put up simple register page so you can sign up by yourself. You can use your client without any modifications to connect.
This server currently does not provide client for you - you need original game client to play!
Updated to v35
You can get your download code with instructions how to connect to server here:
*removed*
Have fun testing your ideas!
PS: Please don't try to break it. It took me some time to set it up :-)
We have some new members - I didn't even think somebody would register that soon. Please let me know what to change on the server. I understand that few people don't have much fun there as there is nothing to do. I can make all the traps free so you can test your ideas. I can even make it so you don't lose your house when you die so you don't have to rebuild it every time. I'm not sure how people would like to use this server. Just throw some ideas at me.
60 active houses! We have several daily users!
I'm really happy about how the server goes. We have several daily users. Thanks to all of you that make this server alive ![]()
Current changes compared to main server:
- start money $5000
- house assets prices set to 0% (yes, everything is free!)
- chills and force ignores set to 1 hour
- house owners get salary $100 per hour + their wifes get $50 per hour
Your suggestions:
- higher start money (10000) - easy to do (~ 1 minute to change it on server)
- make everything free - making it just a sandbox server (~ easy change)
- make tools really expensive and house assets cheap so people can build whatever houses they can and robbers need to solve them (~ easy change)
- disable chills or make them shorter (~ easy change)
- not lose house after you die - harder to do (~ day to do it on server)
Game client modifications:
- disable shroud during robbery (so people can learn how other people make traps) (hard to do)
- enable blueprints (hard to do)
- limit on stack size for tools with multiple stacks of the same tool allowed. Limit per stack 8 or 10.
No no no, that's what I was trying to show you! Isn't that button terrifying?!?!?
Since you don't seem to get the genius of that design, I've updated my post with something you might understand a bit better.
(Oopsies)

I was thinking about using the free hosting that Silence is using if this turns out well, which is why I was wanting some basic ideas of how to get started for it. Ideas for a mod have been bouncing around in my head for a while, and since I didn't have a computer that I could use as a server the free hosting really surprised me. I might take you up on your offer if I can't figure it out, though wink
Speaking of the mod, it turns out that there's not as many additions you can make. I keep on thinking "You know what would be cool? Snakes!", think about it for a bit, and realize how it would ruin wife defense. My latest "failed idea" was curtains, that block vision but not movement. Here's a video where I modded switches to do the same thing:
http://www.twitch.tv/theiceman76/c/3759346Can you just imagine mazes that make you complete the entire thing blind? =P
I understand that. I have no problem of hosting server for your ideas. I can even make more sub-servers, but I think one is good enough (nobody has wrote me an email yet
).
Anyone can contribute - I want this to be community server. If you have good ideas and even better if you know how to implement them
we can try them on this server.
I already have the register page ready, but I need to update the server to v33. But everyone will be free to register and as soon as you create account you will get exact instructions how to connect to the server. It's not beautiful, but it works :-)
But it's too late now. I'm going to sleep and finish it tomorrow.
I came up with something like this in my old house:
http://castledraft.com/editor/iE3w4C
When you step on the bottom left electric floor it is hard to get out. If you cut the wall you will be fried from the side where dog is - because you will break paradox circuit which will then start powering the electric floors from the bottom right side through the wire bridge. If you cut the electric floor in front of you the electric floors behind you will not be activated but everything in front of you will be and once you move the dog will hit the button and activate even the electric floors from behind you. The dog also closes door in front of him so the robber really needs to get through all of the electric floors. It is quite hard to brute force and it costs only $1200. 90% of people died on this one.
Okay! It's live.
Thank you!
Great! V33 is coming right now ![]()
It's funnier with sound:

LOLZ! ![]()
I know it's not going to happen, but a notification system would help me. Something that tells me when my house value has increased beyond a value, that way I can get on with my life and not worry about my vault outgrowing its defenses. But I suppose that's not the point of the game.
Hm. That's a good idea. I like it. And it probably wouldn't even be that hard to implement. Anyone is up to the task? I would be able to implement it for Android, but I don't have iPhone so somebody else would have to do that for iPhone.
It's the "Experience with web server administration and installing PHP/MySQL scripts is assumed." part that gets me
I really want to learn, I just don't know where to start
Oh right. That really depends on the provider of your web hosting. If you have your own server it depends on operating system that you use, but there are usually guides on the internet how to get LAMP server working (Web, PHP and mysql).
It is hard to write universal guide for that :-) But try to look for guides to setup LAMP server.
I have the basic server up and running - it is accessible by default game client so no custom build is needed. Currently it's set to default values like the main server. I still don't have forums running and I don't want to clutter tcd forums, but I wanted to let you know so you can send me an email with your email address if you would like access to the server (click on my name to the left and then Send email). I will reply back with the reflectorUrl.ini file and your login data and instructions how to get your client to connect to this server as soon as I can. If you would like to see some special changes to the server (like lower prices or so) let me know and if enough people will want the same change I will change it. As I want this server to be completely free the first change I will probably do will be self-register page so you can register without me. I know it's not very good solution as everyone can have as many accounts as they want, but I'm not sure how to solve it differently yet (suggestions are welcome).
Currently the server is empty so there is no one to rob from so we will see how this will go.
Forums will come soon.
There is nice guide in the sources under CastleDoctrine/server/HowToInstall.txt
I've got my server working using that guide
EDIT: Talking about the modded server - I've got one I used for testing. If anyone would be interested and has some great ideas for mods I would be open to make a free server for everyone (I own quite a few servers around the world ;-) )
To do "deductive reasoning and puzzle solving" you first need to learn what's possible, what are the basic components of this game, what kind of traps can be made, what puzzles are usually used, etc.. after that you can use deductive reasoning and puzzle solving. There is usually only one way to do that - go and die to traps that you didn't know were possible to make. You can also read wiki and sticky threads on this forum to get better idea of what's possible and what to look for when robbing houses.
Clocks are entirely possible and there are few threads on this forum about them - here is the latest one: http://thecastledoctrine.net/forums/vie … php?id=944
I highly recommend to go through the guides on the wiki: http://thecastledoctrine.gamepedia.com/ … trine_Wiki
The one talking about clocks: http://thecastledoctrine.gamepedia.com/ … lectronics
There is also nice guide about clocks on the wiki by joshwithguitar: http://thecastledoctrine.gamepedia.com/Clocks_Guide
I wish I could get a refund for this game, because I really don't want it anymore. I don't know if I'll be playing it... but this final screenshot takes the cake:
https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/766x6 … 9/1zak.jpg
You're going to have to explain to me how when I raid some dude with $800, I take 2 steps into his house and die without seeing anything... and I'm supposed to learn from that. You know what I've learned? This game is not fun. It's pointless. Even the people at the lower levels have traps that only wealthy people can destroy. How the hell did this guy pass his own self-test? There is a clear obstacle in the way of the family. So what, his family is dead? So he gets to cheat?
You have got to be kidding me!
What exactly is fun about this to anyone else? I thought this game was about deductive reasoning and puzzle solving. It's just a bunch of dutch books.
His family is already dead so he doesn't need clear path for them. I understand your confusion, but you need to be patient and learn. We can help you with the learning part. People are making traps - not some kind of AI - they can figure out a lot of ways to fool you. You will die a lot in this game. A lot! And you will learn from that. Now you died because someone has made a trap that you didn't see before. It's possible that the house had some kind of clock - you can discover those by taking a few steps back and forth at the start to see of some traps are activated after few steps.
These are the kind of feelings this game makes you feel, but still - you could have seen the cables in the walls and you even had saws with you so it was entirely possible for you to survive this. You just didn't know that something like this is possible in this game, but now you know and you should remember that and use that to your advantage next time.
